Baartmans and Siegel – Ones to Watch
It’s an odd one for me to say Ones to Watch for this incredible duo as I’ve known them for about 3 years now and have seen their growth as a brand and development season upon season. What I like about Baartmans + Siegel is their love of fabrics and texture. Season after season they explore uses of fabric and apply it to their wondrous outerwear and attractive silhouettes. I’ve been blessed in knowing Amber and Wouter since the 2nd or 3rd season when Amber invited me to their studio. It was a great privilege getting exclusive glimpse at the mood boards and garments while chatting fabrics and menswear.
The most recent showing of BAS saw their SS16 collection previewed at London Collections: Men at Victoria House. Continually playing around with a utilitarian look and masculine styles Amber and Wouter have developed an eye for great outerwear and styling with complimenting layers. The SS16 collection is a ‘visual projection of the desolation of mans mental wilderness- thoughts of wandering the prairies in exploration of contagious grounding and optimism’. Always looking to remind us within their collections, you’ll be able to see the importance of functionality and indulgence, comfort and style – evident in all their garments.
As each season comes and goes, it’s apparent that their aesthetic is ‘maturing’ but staying very true their beliefs. Creating clothing that is purposeful while also carrying a nonchalant attitude – one that resonates will with me – mixing with utility and sport while focusing on quality fabrications. I remember reading years ago in a magazine about how Amber and Wouter were training staff at Harrods for one of their first collections, telling them about the importance of the fabrications. This has remained true ever since.
Creating garments that have a continental chic while also have a prevalent British undertone, you’ll find bomber jackets and overcoats that sit effortlessly over relaxed shirting or knitwear. What some may call sports-luxe I also call a mix of modern Rationalism/Naturalism that embraces utility, comfort and practicality. Get hold of the current SS15 while you can!! It features beautiful bombers, jackets and trousers with a blue and green palette that is complimentary to anyone. Inspired from the idea of platoons, sports teams and street gangs there are references to the idea of tribal energy created by these groups. I’m part of the BAS tribe – join me.
